BMW Unlock
after June 2020.

The Electronic Control Units (ECUs) of BMW vehicles built after June 2020 are supplied locked with a different security protocol. To become tunable, they must first go through the "UNLOCK" process. (Unlock is not yet available for the G60 chassis 520i.)

What is Unlock?

Unlock is the process of making the ECU writable — configuring the bootloader inside the ECU so software can be written. For BMW vehicles after June 2020, the company able to access the bootloader is FEMTOEVO (our partner since 2022). RSA Motorsports provides both unlock and software the same day; FEMTOEVO handles the unlock, RSA prepares the engine and transmission software.

How does the process work?

Registered customers are informed ahead of the Unlock days held every Saturday in Istanbul and every Tuesday in Ankara, and are invited to our service points. Unlock is performed only in Istanbul and Ankara.

The work takes about 4–5 hours. Cars are taken in by 10:00 at the latest and returned in the afternoon. Both the unlock and the performance software are completed within this time.

Software & coding options.

Transmission software and coding

To increase customer satisfaction, we also provide transmission software and coding. You can choose your preferred options in advance and tell us during the application to speed things up.

• V1 transmission software applies only to 1600cc 3, 4, 5 series and X3 models.

• V2 transmission software applies only to 1600cc 3 and 4 series.

• For other engine versions, ask in advance for custom transmission software and pricing.

Note: V2 is not offered for the G30 520i and G01 X3; V1 provides V2 features. The "fart" sound on gear changes with sport exhaust does not apply to LCI G30 and LCI X3.

Cluster options

Standard clusters vary by engine hardware. Standard clusters come with 260 km/h and you easily exceed these speeds after the software. If you prefer, coding keeps the cluster at 260 km/h and continues digitally.

Sport gauges

By default the sport gauges come with power and torque display only (unit can be changed between kW / hp / torque). Coding brings M sport gauges, adding turbo pressure and oil temperature.

Note: the G gauge does not work. The power/torque field on the sport gauge changes with the engine control unit software (not by coding); it aims to be as accurate as possible, with a possible ±20 hp deviation.

What people wonder about the process.

Will I have service issues after the software?

You can continue your normal service schedule. However, since a software update to your car would reset both the software and the unlock, we recommend telling the service advisor not to update your car's software.

Is the ECU opened during unlock and software?

No, there is no mechanical intervention to your ECU. The unlock (bootloader) is performed using the necessary pins behind the ECU; it takes about 10 minutes.

Can I revert to original whenever I want?

Of course, you can revert to original anytime with support from our branches. Note: it can be done free of charge once within 1 year.

I'm not in a city with your branch — how does remote support work?

You can remove your car's ECU and send it to us by courier (removing the ECU is quite simple; you can watch our removal video). Your ECU is unlocked on our side and sent back; it works plug-and-play. Then software is loaded remotely via the OBD socket using an ENET cable and a Windows computer with an Ethernet port. If you want transmission software, you must state it in advance (removing the transmission ECU is quite hard).
